This discussion paper makes a narrative case for training the mind, in order to meet more skilfully the manifold existential challenges of our times. We’ll propose that three crucial dimensions of human agency are underdeveloped and increasingly under threat - and with reference to training theory and burgeoning academic research, that mindfulness training could be foundational in addressing these deficits. Far from being just a ‘nice to have’ wellbeing benefit in the workplace or an alternative to prescription drugs for mental health treatment, cultivating the innate capacity of mindfulness and its essential qualities such as attention control, receptivity, meta-cognitive awareness, cognitive flexibility, embodiment, emotion regulation and kindness through evidence-based training programmes is needed to ‘level up’ individual and collective agency to be equal to complex, 21st Century problems.
