This discussion paper makes the narrative case for training the mind and heart, the better to meet the unprecedented existential challenges of our times. We’ll propose that three aspects of human agency are underdeveloped and increasingly under threat - and with reference to training theory and burgeoning academic research, that mindfulness training could be foundational in addressing this deficit. Far from being just a ‘nice to have’ wellbeing benefit in the corporate workplace or an alternative to prescription drugs for mental health treatment, the widespread cultivation of attention control, receptivity, meta-cognitive awareness, cognitive flexibility, embodiment, emotion regulation, empathy and compassion through evidence-based training programmes is truly required to ‘level up’ individual and collective agency to be equal to 21stCentury complex problems.
